Before reading these articles, I knew that it was not legal to download copyrighted songs and movies and file sharing, but I didn’t realize that they were such serious problems. I was stunned, when I saw that every illegally downloaded song would cost $750 to $150,000 in the article. It was terrible to pay that amount of money. In contrast, in my motherland, it was legal to do those kinds of things. We can download or listen to free music, watch or download free film, and read or download free books from the Internet. Even though there are copyrights in my country, pirate things like CDs are everywhere in my motherland. As a result, I understand why Recording Industry Association of America set such laws. It is trying to protect the copyright of the music, movie, or other industries. Establishing and improving the framework of laws and rules on copyright piracy are needed. I think copyright fights are not only about money, but also morality.
i think that copy right is a pretty serious topic recently. in my opinion, i think that people all should pay for the file they download from the internet. because all the songs or ideas from whom they made took a lot of time for the author to come up with. and it's their creativity thus people who want to download them should pay for them. and one of the article mention that people ask for the copy right is for the money but for the morality. but i think that people pay the copy right is reasonable. just due to the morality, people have to pay the money. and because their ideas are appreciate by other people, people want to own them. thus, they should pay for it because it definitely worths it.
people just want to "save money" so they download files from the internet. but actually, it costs much then they "save".
This topic is kind of controversy since it happens anywhere nowadays. People could easily download what they want from the Internet. This is actually not a good thing to be done. Imagine, if u were a singer and your song was able to be downloaded for free by people. How would you feel? I agree with Joy when she said "it's their creativity thus people who want to download them should pay for them". However, if I think people would pay if they put an affordable price for files that they put on the Internet. Students usually do illegal downloading because they could not afford to pay for some files on the Internet. Thus, they have to download them illegally even though they know it is wrong.
File-sharing is very serious problem today because of the high-speed technology development and increasing people’s desire for downloading music, movies, etc. There is large number of people downloading files illegally. If we can’t stop them file-sharing, many authors in the world will have serious financial problems. Since all the songs, movies, and ideas are made by authors’ work, the copyright need to be protected. The problem here is that how can we stop file-sharing. It is very hard work to be done since the technology keeps developing every minute and there is no single solution for it. Even many of us know that file-sharing is illegal I don’t think the problem will be solved in the near future.
Nowadays, it is so easy to download or share music or movies over the internet. People know that it is illegal to share files, but they still look for them. However, let’s think about if you work in a company. What would you feel, if you do not get paid for what you have done? You can possibly relate this to what musicians or music director. I think that they have the rights to get paid for what they have created. I saw the second article talking about the community of ‘Free Culture’. Freedom is a good word to use. However, if we keep looking for free songs, books, and movies and download them, it will discourage their creativity and downgrade their passion toward their works. It could result in the future that we will not be able to listen to good songs or watch good movies, as we’ve always wanted. We should use our freedom, when we are certain that our freedom would not have negative effects on our neighbors.
I will describe illegal download as "unavoidable crime". We all know that it is illegal but trust me, there is now way we can avoid it. The technology we have today make it impossible to do that. Internet has been widely used around the world. Plus, the connection in the United States is much faster than other place so that the downloading process will be faster. Additionally, in the internet, there are a lot of illegal download options available for users. For example, by using torrent, we can share file with anybody who has internet connection. There are also tons of software that make file sharing become accessible such as Ares, Limewire, Bearshare and so on. Lastly, illegal file sharing in the internet is ineluctable because it is free. Logically, why should i pay a couple of bucks to get my favorite song from iTunes store or any store while i can get it for free from Ares. Based on all the reasons i presented above, illegal file sharing in the internet will be never stopped no matter how hard the recording companies try to stp it. As i said before, it is an "unavoidable crime".
Respecting copyrights was always important but it has become a big issue over the past few years due to a lot of illegal file sharing on the internet. File sharing on the internet cannot be so strictly enforced which is becoming a problem, but not so many people are aware of the concequences of when they do get caught sharing files on the internet. Although it is quite understandable from the consumer's perspective of why file sharing occurs so often, it needs to be strictly enforces in order to protect the artists.
However, even more important than strictly enforcing the law, is to properly inform the people about the law on copyrights since most people do not seem to understand the seriousness about this matter just like those students at Brown University. Both informing and enforcing the copyright law is necessary to avoid artists from being in danger.
Just by clicking a few things, these days, we are able to get pretty much everything including music, movies, photos, etc. Most people knew that downloading files without any costs are illigal, but they still download whatever they want alothough they knew it is not an legal thing to do. At the first time, I could not understand, why do we have to pay for downloading stuffs, but after I read the articles, I could have better understanding. There is a thing called copyright, and as long as they have a copyright, people can not share without author's agreements. While I was reading this article, I was thinking in the author's point view. What would I feel, if a number of people share my work without paying, or under my agreements?
the authors are encountering huge disadvatages because of this. It spreaded too much to be fixed in a short period time. The most impoertant aspect to solve this problem is people's morality.
I think the whole thing is just a money issue.
It can absolutely save a lot of money for individuals who share files, namely, pirates. Sometimes you want to use a software for only once and it doesn't worth it to purchase the whole copy for several hundred dollars even if there are some student special price sometimes. In such cases people may tend to look around on the Internet and find some free alternatives instead of spending money for a one-time use of a certain file.
It is sometimes a good thing to File copyright owners, too. Suppose a movie star or a singer has just made a movie/song and he/she wants to sell it to the public. The more reputation he has, the more money he could make from the song. So it is a good choice to spread his song on the Internet and let people download for free. When more people listen to the song, the singer gets more potential customers.
I have always been a music downloading lover since I can’t live without listening to music every day. There is an open secret among all campus: everybody has sources to use to download illegally. It is quite a common incidence; however, nowadays people start to realize the importance of keeping copyrights. I myself consider this matter on two sides. It is hard to say if it is morally illegal in a sense to download music illegally. After all as long as we keep it to ourselves, never publish them would be morally legal, I think. And don’t forget that sometimes we bought the CD in the market, but we just need to download those mp3s from the internet to fulfill our ipod. Seems we’ve already paid for the copyrights anyway. There are music company are enforcing extreme punishments for college students, and I have to say for god sake, we are only college students. What can we do to the artist? We don’t sell them anyway. To some extent, it is a great way to promote anyway. People even buy CDs after downloading mp3s sometimes. On the other hand, we do need to insert some more efficient systems to provide a better way for college students to downloading mp3s from the internet. I think there is still a very long way to go since the internet age has just started.
