Topic #3: Internet and security

Our #3 topic is Internet and security proposed by Youngil. I believe this is again a topic that closely affects all of us as so much of our lives is spent online.
Here are the articles Youngil thought adequate to serve as a springboard for our discussion:

They Know All About You - Guardian
http://www.guardian.co.uk/g2/story/0,,1859629,00.html,

FAQ: when Google is not your friend - CNET news
http://www.news.com/2100-1025_3-6034666.html?part=rss&tag=6034666&subj=news, and

Now, I hope you will be able to pen your opinions in a more elaborated way as last time most of you fell short of the minimum 150 word limit I required for each entry.

As always, have fun with it,

The internet is perhaps the best tool that man has ever created. It is world wide network where everybody in the world is a member. One can be in Alaska and still be able talk to somebody in India. But not everything is perfect and the internet does have its flaws. Since it is so vast it is easy for people to steel your information online. Such information may include bank info, pin number, etc. I have had some personal experience with identity theft. I was in Purdue and my mom calls me up really upset. She was mad at me because in her bank statement it said that I spend $600 in a place called Tortilla Factory in New Orleans. I obviously did not do it, but somebody did and did steel my info. So, my advice is to be careful were you buy online. Also, you should never give your bank info online to anybody!

Internet consists of billions of smaller doesmestic, academic, businese, entertainment and government netweoks, which together carry various information and servies. It symbolizes an evolution of technology over the century.

The internet is a convinient tool to the society, allowing people to access services, download the newest information, check email replies or even pay bills. However, as convinient as it seems, it would also create a debate on the security issue.

While we get to download the newest information off the internet, for example music and videos, the sources of those music and videos may intrude the copyrights and security- means of the artists, Another example of the security issue would be your personal information. This problem has been quite commonly seen throughout the news nowadays, strangers could simply download one's credit card number and pins, home address, telephone number, or even the number of family members you have!

Although the internet may be as useful and convinient as it is, there is always an ugly side to it as well, the internet may be just as dangerous as you giving out your numbers to a stranger on the road. Therefore, use the internet wisley without intruding the laws, and act smart without giving out the chance for others to download your information off the internet.

The internet has proven to be a great resource. Consisting of millions, of websites that satisfy every need of every person around the world. It has made life easier. sending and receiving mail that only takes second to travel from one place of the globe to another, is just one of many advantages the internet has. It has revolutionized the world, facilitating many aspects of human life, bringing the world together through one single page. But even though this great invention has revolutionized the way we live, it has also made us vulnerable to attack.
The internet has been used to purchase many products online. The only information required is a credit card number, a name, address and the product is delivered to your home. This has created many problems. Many company's web pages have been replicated in order to steel their client's information. The internet has facilitated many crimes and is the reason why identity theft is also very common. many precautions have been put in effect in order to protect the customers of these companies, but the problem apparently still exists. These crimes can be prevented when a person is certain that the information set on any online web page or conversation is secured.

Privacy problem on the internet is not a new issue. Most internet users realize that their precious information can be exposed or stolen accidentally. Many people actually have experiences like getting credit card bills that they never used. Some people may be surprised by how it is easy to get private information like social security numbers or credit card numbers if they search the internet intentionally to find those kinds of information. Since these kinds of privacy issues have direct influence on the affected individual, it is well recognized by general internet users that they have to be very cautious in providing any vulnerable information through internet.
The articles of this week’s topic show next level of privacy problem on the internet. The key feature of it is massive concentration of information without recognition of general public. It is not local or individual problem because it deals with vast amount of information of nonspecific internet users. This unintentionally provided information is concentrated or databased into a single company’s hard drive. The provider of information does not recognize that they are providing vulnerable personal information which is systematically stored in somewhere. This humongous amount of raw information would be just garbage, however current technology allows it to be reprocessed if the information holder has intention to do that.
The first article shows a stunning example of this aspect of privacy problem. Regardless of our intention, our internet searching activities are systematically stored in the database of the service provider and it is possible to construct a personal profile based on those data though out time. Surprisingly, the reconstructed profile can be quite accurate and extremely personal. In fact, this huge amount of accurate and personal data is the key asset to the company in generating profit. Even though most of the information holders are claiming that this information is used only for book keeping purpose, this information is exchanged or sold explicitly or implicitly. Even the U.S. government recognized the value of this information and asked the company to provide the information they have.
Some people say that the number one security disaster in U.S. history is the invention of social security number. Any kind of centralization of information has potential privacy hazard. In that regard, the current information concentration phenomenon on internet is needed to be addressed and recognized as a serious alarm on the freedom and privacy of our internet life and our life itself which is hard to be imagined without internet.

Nowadays, it is nearly impossible for many of us to live without the resources and services we get from the internet. We are all aware of how internet is a pivotal part of our lives. Many problems came along with this technological advance, however. For example, identity theft, which is people stealing personal information for use, is one. Moreover, I have encountered cases where certain companies I have never heard of calling me over the phone asking me about the need for their service. This makes me think that when we actually write down our contact information anywhere onlne, it is not guaranteed that our information will only remain in that place but there are chances that it might get spread all over. For me, this is manipulation of privacy rights and something that we all should be really careful about.
It is important for the consumers to be aware of this but the service providers also should consider more about providing more privacy and not let the consumer's information to leak out.

The Internet could be the one of the most useful tools in ever. We are relying on this technology so much, and it will be really hard for us having our daily lives without it.
I am very nervous about this tipic since I just had my personal experience about the Internet security 2 weeks ago. I have received a virus mail, and accidently opened it. I did not realize that I have received the virus for a while, but my computer got slower and slower, and finally got broken after 2 days. I realized that I have had the virus in my computer at that time as first time. I was so scared since there was some possibility that my data have been exposed to some one for 2 days. Luckily, all of my information were ok and was not stealed, but still it was scared experience for me.
On the other hand, the life without the internet is also hard. Since my computer got broken, I had to buy a new one, and it took about 2 week to be delivered to me. During that 2 weeks, I did not have my own PC. So that, I could not use the internet in my room. I could not do research, on-line assignment, writing reports, anything related to the Internet. It was another horrible experience which relates to the internet.
From these experiences, I figured out that the internet could be a double-edged sword for us. It can be both good and bad being for us.
I think the most important thing in here is that we have to be aware of the risk of the internet, and do some selp-protection by ourselves. Like everyone say in here, that is the most effective way.

The internet allows you to browse whatever you want to your heart’s content, but anything you do online will always be recorded by someone. Everything can be traced back to a specific person. If we buy something online, there’s a chance that what we submitted will be stored somewhere we do not know; that’s when problems arise. Although many may not realize this, being on the web does not ensure privacy even when you are alone. Identity thefts play a huge role in all this lack-of-privacy issue and all they do is to stir things up even more. On the other hand, having my “Google search database” under someone else’s command does not mean a lot for me, but knowing that there are people out there that know about us and what we do is slightly uncomfortable. All we can do now is to be careful with what we do and avoid giving out important information. We know that there are some people out there that may use it for their own good.

Internet is basically one the basic needs today. Especially us, Purdue University stuents, we can't live without internet. Many assignments, tasks, and homeworks are assigned in the internet. We can even read some of our teacher's lectures note by using internet.

Not only as the source of information, internet is also used to make payment online. The development of technology these days enable us to look up books and electronic devices and pay them online by entering our credit card number. It is really efficient but it also contains potential danger. Many of my friends above have told their experiences.

Well, fortunately, I have never experienced financial or data loss that has any relation with internet. However, I've heard stories from my friends that received viruses, from certain websites, and it made his computer to slow down. Therefore, he had to reboot his computer and set it up from the beginning. It caused him to lose some of his precious datas. Besides virus, we also know the term 'hacker'. Hacker can create a program that enable him to penetrate our computer and steal our data.

Judging from the positive and negative effects from internet, it is recommended to play safe. Never opens webpage from unknown source, turns on pop-up blocker, never opens SPAM messages, downloads anti virus, and keeps your id (credit card, SSN, signaturem, etc) secret, even to our best friends.

Every single facility has its advantages and its disadvantages. It is the same with internet. For the benefit of it people can do anything with the help of the internet.People can chat, purchase items, listen to songs, watch live videos. There is no such thing which cannot be done with the help of the internet. Internet has also become cheap in the past years, so it is the most convenient form of communication and other things in very little time.
But,this internet has also a lot of disadvantages which can make people bankrupt, loose private information etc.

So one should avoid the usage of the internet as much as possible. Bookings from websites of good established companies is safe but yet it is become unsafe day by day.Credit details, money transactions should be avoided and one should try to be as safe as one can.

With the development of technology, the internet is applied to every aspect in our daily life. Although the internet provides tremendous convenience to our life and changes our model of life completely, it dose bring big problem to people, that is the security of internet.
This problem has become a popular topic which is talked about much by people recently, because this problem is not a small issue any more. For example, some hackers use internet to steal large amount of money from private account or bank system, this kind of crime is not like the ordinary crime like before. The criminal didn’t need lot of tools like guns but only a computer, then they can steal a lot of money through internet just in a small room, may be you can not imagine this, but it’s true things happened in our life.
I think the only way to control this type of crime is develop the security technology of internet, which can against criminal more efficiently

Now we are living in the informative world that we all share quick and accurate
information. For this, the best way is internet to send and get information
from others. We can just access on the internet and know what is going on the
other side of the earth. It is essential to have internet at every home and we
use plenty time on it. It is easy and comfortable, on the other hand we need to
be careful to the exposure of personal information. Many sites need to sign up
for using them then we usually sign up the site in order to access. In Korea, when we sign up the site, most of time, we have to insert our social security
number, phone number, and home address. So there was a news that a member of the company sell the personal informations to other companies. And also virus is another problem when we use the internet. The virus is a program that introduces itself into a system, altering or destroying the information stored in the system. The virus usually is downloaded from the internet, and people make a vaccine to protect it. One thing that we need to remember is that the internet is not a free space to share your all ideas, you need to take care when you use the internet. Your information and PC would be exposured to others.

Anyone who has experienced what Internet is should have felt how useful the internet is.
BUT, it is risky using internet. There are viruses, hackers/crackers, and many dangerous things.
There are people fighting against those dangerous things, but still, bad things come out first and then people develop curing or blocking viruses and hackers.
Anyway, problem of hackers or some viruses are that they steal your information from you. For example, you are online-shopping, and need to pay in card, which requires you to put all the information of the card, and if that is stolen by someone else, you are getting a critical loss.
It is also possible for you to get your ID stolen.

Learn how to doubt unknown people, and learn how to react on the bad things on internet.
